課程概述

During the first half of Composition II, you learned the strategies and expectations of research writing, one of which is, precisely, to work with peer-reviewed sources and handle verifiable information. You also went through the process of planning, researching, and writing a term paper. We broke down this process into smaller stages: brainstorming, drafting, outlining, revising, proofreading, peer-reviewing, etc. This semester, you will practice and hone these skills with two added emphases: collaborative writing and conference presentations. As you complete an original research paper throughout the semester, you will have a chance to receive meaningful feedback from your peers and to give advice to others in return. You will also learn how to design an effective oral presentation based on your research project, writing and presenting a conference paper—a key genre of academic writing. These novelties notwithstanding, we will continue to emphasize the craft of research and critical thinking: formulating research questions, finding and evaluating sources, keeping track of your research results, and integrating these into consistent and persuasive arguments.

課程目標
• Understand writing as a process, becoming proficient in its several stages: pre-writing, outlining, summarizing, annotating, drafting, proofreading, etc.
• Develop information-literacy and critical-reading skills
• Learn the basic structures and conventions of academic essays and arguments
• Gain familiarity with key genres of academic writing: analytical essays, research proposals, abstracts, annotated bibliographies, conference papers, and research papers
• Improve English vocabulary and learn to identify and fix grammatical errors
• Review and edit one’s own and others’ work for both content and style
課程要求
• Class attendance (3 or more unjustified absences will result in an F grade)

指定閱讀
Our textbook remains Lee Brandon and Kelly Brandon, At a Glance: Writing Essays and Beyond with Integrated Readings. 6th edition. Cengage Learning, 2014. You can purchase this at Bookman Bookstore (Phone: 23658617). Bring your copy to class every week. In addition, always bring:
• One notebook
• Pen or pencil
• English dictionary (electronic or physical). I suggest you download the app of an authoritative English dictionary such as Merriam-Webster
• Copies of the reading assignment for that day (printed or digital, but only in your tablet or laptop—no cellphones!)

In order to complete the writing assignments for this class, you need access to a computer and Microsoft Word processor software (which you can download for free as a NTU student). If you do not own a computer, you may borrow and/or use one at the library.
